Overview

Veterinarian shortages in both food-animal and mixed-animal practices have persisted across many rural areas for over a decade. Programs like the USDA’s Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) work to address service gaps and overcome a longstanding difficulty in recruiting and retaining veterinarians. This report provides new evidence on factors contributing to rural veterinarian shortages by examining veterinary service demand, and demographic, education, and practice characteristics of the rural veterinary workforce.
