Briefly

Alex Majchrowicz is an Agricultural Economist in the Food Economics Division. He is responsible for directing and managing the Research Innovation and Development Grants in Economics (RIDGE) Program and for assisting the Division manage a broad array of extramural research agreements. As director of RIDGE, Alex works in partnership with the RIDGE Research Center at Tufts University/University of Connecticut to award competitive grants annually to social science scholars for the purpose of stimulating new and innovative research on food and nutrition assistance issues. The RIDGE Program seeks to broaden and strengthen the network of university-based researchers who collaborate in tackling the unique food and nutrition assistance challenges existing across communities, regions, and States.

Background

Alex joined ERS in January 1980 on a student appointment while attending the University of Maryland. Initially assigned to monitor foreign investment in U.S. agricultural land, he later became involved in a variety of research issues that involved property tax assessment, agricultural land transfers, rural business and industry conditions and trends, and changes in farm and farm-related employment. More recently, his research has focused on USDA food and nutrition assistance programs, specifically the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC); the School Breakfast Program; and the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations.

Education

Alex received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of Maryland at College Park.
