Food dollar data tables are available in Excel and csv formats. Some notes about the data files:

Nominal Data

The FoodDollarDataNominal.xlsx file and the FoodDollarDataNominal.csv file include statistics reported in current year dollars. In the data rows, each row statistic covers a unique combination of year, unit of measurement, table number, and category number. These are defined as follows:

YEAR: 1993 to 2022

UNITS: reported in both cents per domestic food dollar and total domestic food dollars (million dollars)

The data column statistics cover three primary value added categories, imports, and row totals:

  • Salary_and_benefits: Compensation to domestic hired labor for services on behalf of a domestic establishment that directs sales towards fulfilling the supply of food to the U.S. market.
  • Output_taxes: Excise, sales, property, and severance taxes (less subsidies), customs duties, and nontax fees levied by Federal, State, and local governments.
  • Property_income: Compensation to owners of machinery, equipment, structures, natural resources, product inventory, and other tangible or intangible assets for services on behalf of a domestic establishment that directs sales to the U.S. food supply.
  • Imports: Compensation to international assets for their services on behalf of nondomestic establishments whose products are imported and used as production inputs by U.S. establishments that directs sales to the U.S. food supply (value added is assigned to industry group with which the imported products are associated).
  • Total: The sum of value added from salary and benefits, output taxes, property income, and imports.

Note: Tables 7–16 are only available for benchmark years 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012.

Breakouts for salary and benefits, output taxes and property income are not available for years 1993–1996 but are subsumed in the “Total” column.
