In 2010, 6.4 million U.S. households-5.4 percent of households-had very low food security at some time during the year. In these households, the food intake of one or more members was reduced and eating patterns were disrupted at times during the year because the household lacked money or other resources for food. In 2009, 5.7 percent of U.S. households had very low food security. This chart is from the Food Security in the United States topic on the ERS website, updated September 7, 2011.
