Washington State led in certified organic apple acres in the U.S. in 2008

Two pie charts showing the share of certified organic apple acreage among selected States.

ERS collects data from USDA-accredited State and private certification groups to calculate the extent of certified organic farmland acreage and livestock in the United States. Overall, certified organic cropland and pasture accounted for about 0.6 percent of U.S. total farmland in 2008. Certified organic apple acres represented about 5 percent of all apple acreage in 2008. Washington State led in organic apple acreage in 2008, with 73% of the 17,626 acres of organic apples in the United States. This chart is found in the September 2011 issue of Amber Waves magazine, and is based on the Organic Production data product found on the ERS website.
