In 2018, 39 percent of cow-calf farms were rural residence farms, but their cattle made up a smaller percent of the total U.S. beef cow inventory than other cow-calf farms

Although other farms in other agricultural sectors are growing larger, a high percentage of cow-calf farms remains small in scale. USDA, Economic Research Service research indicates cow-calf farming continues to be attractive to farmers for whom lifestyle is a primary motivator for farming.
