Food at home: While changes in inflation-adjusted spending were negative in 2022–2023 amid high food inflation, changes returned to positive increases in the first half of 2024

The USDA, Economic Research Service’s Food Expenditure Series tracks spending on food at home and food away from home. In 2023, the series shows, per capita food spending by U.S. consumers, businesses, and Government entities reached a high of $7,672, fueled primarily by a 12-percent increase in spending on food away from home.
