Farm Household Well-beingFarm households typically receive income from both farm and off-farm sources. The well-being of farm operator households often relies more on their nonfarm activities and investments than on their farm businesses. Research and data provide information on the sources of farm household income and wealth, the farm-nonfarm allocation of work and investments by farm household members, and other indicators of well-being, such as health insurance coverage. This topic also includes the latest (2019) forecast of income for farm households. |

Agritourism Allows Farms To Diversify and Has Potential Benefits for Rural CommunitiesAgritourism helps U.S. farmers and ranchers generate revenue from recreational or educational activities, such as tours of a working farm, camping, or horseback riding. Beginning and small and mid-size farms are increasingly exploring agritourism as a strategy to remain competitive. Agritourism also has the potential to help revitalize rural economies, educate the public about agriculture, and preserve agricultural heritage. According to data from the Census of Agriculture, farm agritourism revenue more than tripled between 2002 and 2017. |

Unemployment Insurance and USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Together Cushioned the Great RecessionA multi-State project funded by ERS looked at the interaction between the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and unemployment insurance during and following the 2007-09 recession. Participation overlap for the two programs varied for States with different labor market conditions. There is evidence that reduction in access or benefit levels in one program can increase use in the other. |

Climate Change Projected To Increase Cost of the Federal Crop Insurance Program due to Greater Insured Value and Yield VariabilityThe Federal Crop Insurance Program (FCIP) insures participating farmers against adverse production or market conditions. Under the FCIP, the Federal Government pays a portion of farmers’ premiums; these premium subsidies represent the costs to the Government of the FCIP. The cost of administering the FCIP rises in years with adverse weather events, such as droughts, when insurance claims outpace premiums paid for insurance coverage. Recent ERS research used statistical, geophysical, and economic models to explore how climate change could affect yields and the cost of the FCIP. |
