Ruben Ortiz is a social science researcher in the Rural Economy Branch of the Resource and Rural Economics Division.
Ruben joined ERS in July 2020. Prior to joining ERS, he worked as a research consultant for the research computing support unit in the Office of Information Technology at the University of Tennessee—Knoxville. He has also worked teaching research methods and teaching various workshops on applied research, using different statistical software at the university level. His cross-disciplinary research interests encompass basic and applied social science research—particularly related to assessing and explaining inequality, demography, and well-being.
Ruben holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville specializing in Criminology and Statistics. He also holds an M.S and B.S. in Criminal Justice from Bridgewater State University.
Ruben is a member of Population Association of America (PAA), Southern Demographic Association (SDA), The American Society of Criminology (ASC), and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS).
