Briefly

J. Michael Harris is an Economist in the Resource and Rural Economic Division, Farm Economy Branch. His research topics include farm financial analysis, developing and enhancing measures of farm stress and insolvency, and analyzing data from the Agricultural Resource and Management Survey and other data sources to provide useful information and research results to policymakers.

Background

Michael began working for ERS in 1980. His earlier work at ERS was in the Food Economics Division (FED) where he conducted research on food manufacturing structure and financials, food expenditures, and market studies using retail scanner data. He was also heavily involved in the development and use of large food expenditure and retail scanner databases in FED.

Education

Michael received his Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his M.S. in Agricultural Economics and B.S. in Animal Science from Auburn University.
