Briefly

Birgit Meade is the Agency International Coordinator as well as the Assistant Director for Communication of the Market and Trade Economics Division at USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS).

Background

Birgit Meade has been at ERS since 1995. Prior to taking on her current responsibility, Birgit was the Acting Associate Director of the Market and Trade Economics Division. Before that, she was a Senior Economist with a research focus on international food demand issues. She has worked on a broad range of topics, including estimating global food security indicators; examining the influence of income and prices on global dietary patterns; analyzing the impact of trade agreements on agriculture and food consumption; and comparing the cost of production and export competitiveness in corn and soybeans of the United States, Argentina, and Brazil.

Education

Birgit received a M.A. from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Diploma in Economics from the University of Saarland, Germany.
