About ERS

The ERS mission is to inform and enhance public and private decision making on economic and policy issues related to agriculture, food, the environment, and rural development. With over 300 employees, The Economic Research Service is a primary source of economic information and research in the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

ERS staff disseminates economic information and research results through an array of outlets, including:

  • Agency-published research reports, market analysis and outlook reports, economic briefs, and data products
  • An award-winning magazine, Amber Waves, covering the entire range of ERS work (available online)
  • The website, which provides access to all ERS products and which links users directly with ERS analysts
  • Oral briefings, written staff analyses, and congressionally mandated studies delivered directly to executive and legislative branch policymakers and program administrators
  • Articles in professional journals, and papers presented to academic colleagues at conferences and meetings

    • Publishing @ ERS-The peer review and clearance procedures used by ERS to meet the high standards expected of the Federal principal statistical agencies.

    • Information Quality-Guidelines to ensure the quality of the information disseminated by ERS. Also establishes administrative mechanisms to allow the public to seek and obtain correction of that information.

    • ERS Error Correction Policy-In the event that a substantive error is detected in a disseminated information product, ERS will make a correction. A correction notice will be posted on the Errata page and on any files (Excel, HTML, PDF) containing the corrected data.
    • Data Access-Sound and objective data and statistics help assess the health of the food, agriculture, and rural sectors of the U.S. economy. Data support ERS research to inform and enhance public and private decisionmaking on economic and policy issues related to agriculture, food, the environment, and rural development.
    • ERS Data Product Policy Recommendations and Standards-Recommendations describe the principles that ERS will follow to ensure delivery of timely, relevant, high-quality data to key stakeholders and the public. Data products released by ERS will meet agency standards for purpose, utility, objectivity, transparency, integrity, and accessibility.

  • Web Content Publishing Schedule 16x16 - PDF -Section 207(f)(2) of the E-Government Act of 2002 requires Federal agencies to develop an inventory of information to be published on their websites, establish a schedule for publishing information, make those schedules available for public comment, and post the schedules and priorities on the website.
