The ERS Food Dollar periodically updates and improves its methods. Additionally, sometimes substantial revisions occur to the data due to changes in source data. This page compiles updates and revisions to the Food Dollar since 2026.
March 10, 2026
On March 10, 2026, the Food Dollar underwent a comprehensive update as the data product switched to a new model to generate food dollar statistics. The new food dollar increased the number of annual tables from 6, in the previous model, to 47. The update also changed the composition and categorization of industries in the industry group bill and changed the methods for computing farm-to-farm transactions so that farm commodities were not double-counted for value attribution. As a result, the new model estimates are not directly comparable to the previous model estimates. An analysis of how the statistics for the two models differ as well as more details about the change are highlighted in the report A More Detailed Food Dollar: Enhanced Accounting of U.S. Food Costs.
