In 2022, fresh-market pumpkins were grown in all 50 States, with more than 15,000 farms contributing to the harvest, according to data from the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) 2022 Census of Agriculture. This represents an increase of about 6 percent in the number of fresh-market pumpkin farms compared to the 2017 Census of Agriculture. New York, Pennsylvania, and Michigan each reported over 1,000 farms producing fresh pumpkins, while Ohio and Wisconsin followed closely with between 960 and 970 farms, respectively. This widespread production supports the fresh and ornamental market, which includes pumpkins sold for seasonal decoration and for jack-o’-lantern carving—activities popular in the fall. Pumpkin farms are located nationwide to help promote agritourism and to meet broad seasonal and local demand. Fresh-market varieties comprise the bulk of U.S. pumpkin acreage, accounting for approximately 85 percent of total planted area. The remaining 15 percent of planted area is dedicated to the processing market, which focuses on varieties grown specifically for manufacturing canned and pureed products like pie fillings, soups, and other prepared foods. Unlike the fresh market, processing pumpkin production in the United States is geographically concentrated near canning facilities, with Illinois as the top producer.
