Agricultural Research Funding in the Public and Private Sectors

Data for public and private funding of food and agricultural research and development cover the years 1970-2015 (public) and 1970-2014 (private). Data are available in nominal dollars and in values adjusted for inflation.

Agricultural Exchange Rate Data Set

Contains annual and monthly data for exchange rates important to U.S. agriculture. It includes both nominal and real exchange rates for 80 countries (plus the European Union) as well as real trade-weighted exchange rate indexes for many commodities and aggregations.

Food Price Outlook

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for food is probably the most widely used indicator of changes in retail food prices. ERS regularly updates food price forecasts for the short-term period.

Farmland Values, Land Ownership, and Returns to Farmland, 2000-2016

The value of farm real estate accounts for over 80 percent of the value of farm-sector assets and is an important indicator of the sector. This report finds U.S. farmland values appreciated quickly from 2000 to 2015, but have since slowed considerably. Also, farmland appreciation over 2000-2012 led to fewer financially stressed farms.

Nutritional Quality of Foods Acquired by Americans: Findings From USDA’s National Household Food Acquisition and Purchase Survey

ERS investigates possible influences on the foods Americans purchase or otherwise acquire, including consumer income levels, food sources (stores and other sources), food-source access, and participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Fertilizer Use and Price

This product summarizes fertilizer consumption in the United States by plant nutrient and major fertilizer products—as well as consumption of mixed fertilizers, secondary nutrients, and micronutrients—for 1960 through the latest year for which statistics are available. The share of planted crop acreage receiving fertilizer, and fertilizer applications per receiving acre (by nutrient), are presented for the major producing States for corn, cotton, soybeans, and wheat (nutrient consumption by crop data starts in 1964). Fertilizer farm prices and indices of wholesale fertilizer prices are also available.

Changing Farmland Values Affect Renters and Landowners Differently (Amber Waves feature article)

Farm real estate accounts for over 80 percent of farm sector assets. Farmland values have appreciated substantially since 2000, more than doubling from $1,483 per acre in 2000 to $3,060 per acre in 2015. Cropland appreciated faster than pastureland, while farmland in the Midwest appreciated faster than other areas of the country.

Supermarkets, Schools, and Social Gatherings: Where Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Other U.S. Households Acquire Their Foods Correlates With Nutritional Quality (Amber Waves feature article)

A recent ERS study found that SNAP households acquire about the same amount of calories per adult equivalent as non-SNAP households while spending fewer dollars and relying more on school meals and food from family and friends.

USDA Agricultural Projections to 2027

USDA's 10-year projections for the food and agriculture sector cover major agricultural commodities, agricultural trade, and aggregate indicators of the U.S. farm sector, such as farm income.

Agricultural Baseline Database

The agricultural baseline database provides longrun, 10-year projections from USDA's annual long-term projections report. The database covers projections for major field crops (corn, sorghum, barley, oats, wheat, rice, soybeans, and upland cotton), and livestock (beef, pork, poultry and eggs, and dairy).

Highlights From the February 2018 Farm Income Forecast

Net farm income, a broad measure of profits, is forecast to decrease $4.3 billion (6.7 percent) from 2017 to $59.5 billion in 2018, the lowest net farm income level in nominal dollar terms since 2006. Net cash farm income is forecast to decrease $5.0 billion (5.1 percent) to $91.9 billion, the lowest level since 2009. Median household income, which fell 6 percent in 2015 and remained flat in 2016, is forecast to rise 3.5 percent from its 2016 level by 2018 to $78,886 (but decrease 0.8 percent in inflation-adjusted terms).

Farm Household Income and Characteristics

This data product presents the latest household income forecast and socioeconomic indicators for principal operators of U.S. family farms, including health insurance coverage and expenditures of farm operator households.

Using a Policy Index To Capture Trends and Differences in State Administration of USDA's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

ERS study creates a SNAP Policy Index, a metric that captures differences in States' administration of USDA's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)—formerly the Food Stamp Program. Using data from ERS's SNAP Policy Database, the study finds a general trend from 1996 to 2014 toward more accommodative State-level SNAP policies.
