Market Outlook

Related Reports

The Economic Research Service (ERS) conducts a variety of market outlook activities on the global and U.S. rice markets. Details on major changes and events in the world and U.S. rice markets are published monthly in the Rice Outlook report (previously published outlook reports are also available). The annual Rice Yearbook Tables contain historic data sets for both the U.S. and global rice markets.

ERS—along with USDA's World Agricultural Outlook Board, Agricultural Marketing Service, Farm Service Agency, and Foreign Agricultural Service—develops USDA's monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report (WASDE). WASDE provides supply and disappearance tables and season-average farm prices for all-rice, long-grain rice, and combined medium- and short-grain rice for the domestic rice market. For the global market, the WASDE provides an all-rice supply and disappearance table.

Long-term supply and utilization projections for rice are published in USDA Agricultural Baseline Projections, released annually in February. The domestic baseline includes 10-year forecasts for all-rice, long-grain rice, and combined medium- and short-grain rice.  The global baseline is for all-rice only.  The annual published report includes a brief write-up describing the economic rationale driving the long-term forecasts.
