New from ERS—March 2004

Traceability in the U.S. food supply
Traceability systems generate information on the flow of food and food products and aid in tracking food to its source. ERS examined the amount, type, and adequacy of traceability systems, focusing on fresh produce, grains and oilseeds, and cattle/beef. The report's highlights are in a four-page brochure.

U.S.-EU food and agriculture comparisons
How similar and how different are the United States and the European Union in farm structure, production, productivity, risk management, environmental and commodity policy, trade, and food consumption? How might EU enlargement affect bilateral trade relations?

New agricultural baseline projections
USDA agencies make annual 10-year projections of the food and agriculture sector, used to forecast farm program costs, to prepare the President's budget, and to analyze impacts of potential policy changes on U.S. agriculture.

Japan—a new web briefing room
With a population of about 125 million, Japan is a major importer of agricultural products. The web briefing room provides analysis of important aspects of Japan's food and agricultural sectors and the policies that affect its role in world agricultural trade.

Rural education at a glance
This six-page report is packed with key facts on rural education levels, including demographic and occupational information. It documents the steady rise in rural adult educational attainment in the 1990s and the increasing importance of education to rural workers and places.

The food assistance landscape
A convenient six-page brochure summarizes trends in USDA's food assistance programs in fiscal 2003. It profiles the largest programs—notably the Food Stamp Program, the National School Lunch Program, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.

Food safety and international trade
Key issues are summarized in a series of two-page briefs. Issues include the safety of meat/poultry products and of seafood; foodborne illness associated with imported produce; and the resolution of trade disputes.
