High-Speed Internet Service Eluding Rural Areas (New York Times, September 28, 2006)

From ERS

Internet on the Range. Rural areas lag urban areas in access to the Internet, and a gap is evident between farm and nonfarm workplaces. Nonmetro households were also more likely to have dial-up connections rather than high-speed service than metro households.

Salad Producers Take Hit From Spinach E. coli Outbreak (Associated Press, September 26, 2006)

From ERS

Factors Affecting Spinach Consumption in the United States. ERS provides information on the market distribution of spinach, including U.S. spinach consumption by food source (home, away from home), region of the country, ethnic background, income class, age, gender, and race.

Background Information and Statistics: Fresh-Market Spinach. Web page provides current data and recent trends on production, consumption, per capita use, and the size of the fresh spinach market. Wheat Growing Is Steadily Replaced by Corn (New York Times, September 16, 2006)

From ERS

Wheat Backgrounder. Wheat demand has fallen with changing consumer preferences and strong competition in export markets. Low returns led to the substitution of competing crops for wheat, particularly on the Plains. ERS reviews the operating and financial characteristics of wheat farms, wheat export trends, and recent costs and returns to the sector.

In the News

Farmers Prefer Crop Subsidies Over “Green” Payments (Reuters, September 14, 2006)

From ERS

Greening Income Support and Supporting Green. "Green payments” refer broadly to farm payment programs that would merge farm income support and conservation payments. A challenge is that income support and conservation payments have different purposes and often go to different producers and areas.

In the News

From ERS

Food Security Assessment. In 2005, 777 million people were food insecure in 70 lower income countries studied in this report. Sub-Saharan Africa is the only region where the number of hungry people has risen—over 19 percent—during the last decade.

In the News

Experts Say Obesity Begins at Home (USA Today, September 13, 2006)

From ERS

Overweight Children: Is Parental Nutrition Knowledge a Factor? Parents with greater knowledge about and interest in nutrition are less likely to have overweight children. Parents’ weight status and their perception of their own weight status can also factor into the prevalence of overweight children.

In the News

Fish Farming Nearly Matches Wild Catch in World Output (New York Times, September 4, 2006)

From ERS

Aquaculture Outlook. ERS examines the U.S. aquaculture industry including production, inventory, sales, prices, inputs, and trade of catfish, trout, tilapia, salmon, mollusks, crawfish, shrimp, ornamental fish, and new species.

In the News

EU Trade Chief To Confer With Trade Leaders (Des Moines Register, September 3, 2006)

From ERS

Global Agriculture and the Doha Round: Market Access Is the Key. Persistent differences on necessary cuts in agricultural tariffs and domestic support were the main factor in suspension of Doha Round negotiations. Research indicates that tariff reductions that improve market access are key to achieving the benefits of trade liberalization.
