The impact of the industrial shift from goods to services in rural America has been the subject of some debate. ERS examined the relationship between employment trends and industrial and occupational shifts. Among the findings: The share of low-skill jobs in the rural employment mix fell by 2.2 percentage points between 1990 and 2000, to 42.2 percent, slower than the 5-percentage-point drop in the 1980s.

Woman shops for groceries with two small children U.S. household food security in 2004 (October 28, 2005)
Eighty-eight percent of American households were food secure in 2004 throughout the entire year. The prevalence of food insecurity was 11.9 percent, compared with 11.2 percent in 2003. This report contains the most recent statistics on food security of U.S. households as well as their food expenditures and the extent to which food-insecure households participated in food assistance programs.

New opportunities for U.S. apple exports to Japan (October 26, 2005)
With resolution of a U.S.-Japan apple trade dispute, U.S. producers have a new opportunity to export to a high-quality market. ERS estimates that Japan’s apple imports will rise by $144 million per year on average, and demand for U.S. apples could increase by 5 nearly percent, though market conditions may fluctuate.

In the first of a series of background reports on key U.S. commodities, ERS reviews the adjustments in the peanut sector following the elimination of the decades-old marketing quota system in 2002. Lower prices are raising Federal expenditures on the current peanut program, and the impact of trade agreements is also a key issue.

ERS examined the relationship of beef consumption to income, ethnicity, race, age, gender, and region of the country. Among the findings: per capita consumption was highest in the Midwest, and low-income consumers tend to eat more beef than other income groups.
