ERS provides a detailed description and analysis of Japan’s policies supporting its milk producers and regulating dairy markets. These policies affect trade patterns and are important to the current round of global trade negotiations conducted by the World Trade Organization (WTO).
   
Bundle of cookies The demographics of sugar consumption (August 19, 2005)
ERS draws on USDA data to report on consumption of sugar and other sweeteners by income, race, ethnic origin, age, and region. Among the findings: per capita sweetener consumption is highest in the Midwest and lowest in the Northeast.
   
Rural main street buildings Recreation, tourism, and rural well-being (August 12, 2005)
Recreation and tourism development generally increases local employment, wage levels, and income in rural areas. Drawbacks include higher housing costs. Local effects vary significantly, depending on the type of recreation area.

Organic farmland and sales are rapidly growing worldwide, and the two largest markets are in the European Union (EU) and the United States. ERS compares EU and U.S. organic agriculture policy and examines the organic sectors in the two regions.
   
Cattle grazing (two animals) Animal product markets buffeted by response to diseases (August 5, 2005)
Disease outbreaks and related trade restrictions continued to constrain markets in 2004. U.S. cattle and beef markets were most affected, although outbreaks of Avian Influenza affected poultry markets. Forecasts of 2005 U.S. animal-products trade reflect expected market responses.
