Detroit Promoting Summer Food Program for Children (Detroit Free Press – June 28, 2006)

Feeding Low-Income Children When School Is Out—The Summer Food Service Program. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), funds meals for children in low-income areas when school is not in session. USDA's Economic Research Service recently sponsored a comprehensive study of the SFSP.

Away-From-Home Foods Increasingly Important to Quality of American Diet. The increasing popularity of dining out has raised the proportion of nutrients obtained from away-from-home food sources. While home foods significantly improved their nutritional quality, away-from-home foods typically contained more of the nutrients over-consumed (fat and saturated fat). The ERS website on Food CPI, Prices, and Expenditures shows the proportion of spending on food away from home over time.
