Beef Prices Expected to Stay Up As Supply Shrinks
Washington Post – October 27, 2010
“You've got a whole bunch of things coming together and it's driving all meat prices higher," said Ken Mathews, an agricultural economist with the research arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture [ERS]. "Beef is the highest price of the meats so that's the one that gets the notice."

Inflation Outlook for Food Still Tame
Wall Street Journal – October 26, 2010
Ephraim Leibtag, the USDA [ERS] economist responsible for the forecast, said surging prices of commodities such as corn and wheat are increasing the odds that the 2011 food-inflation rate will be at the high end of his forecast range.

Food Prices Expected to Rise Sharply

In this era of massive liquidity, everything is up, except for food prices—specifically processed food (made from many of the same commodities and other ingredients whose prices have risen). According to the USDA, that is going to change. In its most recent CPI report for food, the USDA [ERS] reported that prices are expected to rise in 2011.

School Cafeterias to Try Psychology in Lunch Line

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced what it called a major new initiative Tuesday, giving $2 million to food behavior scientists to find ways to use psychology to improve kids' use of the federal school lunch program and fight childhood obesity…. "It's not nutrition till it's eaten," said Joanne Guthrie, a [ERS] researcher who announced the new grants. The initiative will include creation of a child nutrition center at Cornell University, which has long led this type of research.

[Market] Planner Aims to Increase Local Food Commerce

The [web-based] tool calculates a rate of demand for each crop the farmer selects, based on food availability data reported each year by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service and U.S. Census data for consumers in the target market.

How Cotton Price Snarls WTO Fix
Capital Press – October 7, 2010
Cotton prices climbed to $1.14 per pound in September, compared with 65.9 cents per pound in 2009 and a range of 30 to 65 cents between 1997 and 2009, according to the USDA Economic Research Service. In an August report, ERS forecast that countercyclical payments would decrease by 79 percent from $1.17 billion in 2009 to $243 million in 2010 because cotton prices were high.

On Friday, October 1st, 2010 Omaha, Nebraska’s new 2.5% restaurant tax took effect … Every meal that is not cooked and eaten at home can add an average of 134 extra calories per day, according to "The Impact of Food Away From Home on Adult Diet Quality" by the USDA Economic Research Service.
