GRAIN BALANCES
This data set contains 17 files on the grain balances for each of the
15 former Soviet Union (FSU) countries, from 1987/88 through
1994/95. The balances consist of harvested grain area, production,
beginning and ending stocks, marketing year imports (July/June),
marketing year exports (July/June), and total domestic grain
consumption, which include feed use, food use, seed use, industrial
use, and waste. For each country, the balances are given for total
grains, for total coarse grains, as well as for individual grain
types -- wheat, barley, corn, millet, oats, and rye. All data are given
in 1,000 metric tons, except for harvested area which is in 1,000
hectares.
ARMENIA.WK1 file contains the grain balance for Armenia.
AZERBAIJ.WK1 file contains the grain balance for Azerbaijan.
BELARUS.WK1 file contains the grain balance for Belarus.
ESTONIA.WK1 file contains the grain balance for Estonia.
GEORGIA.WK1 file contains the grain balance for Georgia.
KYRGYZ.WK1 file contains the grain balance for the Kyrgyz Republic.
KAZAKH.WK1 file contains the grain balance for Kazakhstan.
LATVIA.WK1 file contains the grain balance for Latvia.
LITHUAN.WK1 file contains the grain balance for Lithuania.
MOLDOVA.WK1 file contains the grain balance for Moldova.
RUSSIA.WK1 file contains the grain balance for the Russian Federation.
TAJIK.WK1 file contains the grain balance for Tajikistan.
TURKMEN.WK1 file contains the grain balance for Turkmenistan.
UKRAINE.WK1 file contains the grain balance for Ukraine.
UZBEK.WK1 file contains the grain balance for Uzbekistan.
BALTICS.WK1 file contains the grain balance for the Baltic
States (the sum of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania).
FSU15.WK1 file contains the grain balance for the entire former
USSR region (the 12 CIS countries and the 3 Baltic States).
NOTES: The FEED AND RESIDUAL category includes feed use and
waste.
The WASTE category is a percentage of production, depending on the size of
the crop.
The FSI category is the sum of food, seed, and industrial uses of grain.
TOTAL COARSE GRAINS category includes barley, corn, millet, oats, and rye.
TOTAL GRAINS category includes wheat and coarse grains.
The data are USDA estimates as of April 1995, based on various
primary data sources, and are subject to revision on a monthly
basis.
COTTON BALANCES
This data set contains 1 file named COTBAL.WK1 on the cotton balances
for each of the 15 former Soviet Union (FSU) countries, from
1987/88 through 1994/95. Within the file are 2 tables.
The balances consist of harvested cotton area, production of seed
and lint cotton, seed cotton yield, ginning rate, beginning and
ending stocks, lint cotton imports (total, intra-FSU, and extra-
FSU), lint cotton exports (total, intra-FSU, and extra-FSU), total
domestic cotton consumption (both in absolute and per capita
terms), and cotton cloth production. All numbers are marketing
year data (August-July), except for cotton cloth production data,
which are calendar year (January-December).
Table 1 contains cotton balances in terms of bales, with all data
expressed in 1,000 480-lb. bales except for: 1) harvested area
(1,000 hectares); 2) seed cotton yield (tons per hectare); 3) per
capita consumption (kilograms per year); and cotton cloth
production (1,000 square meters).
Table 2 contains cotton balances in tonnage terms, with all data
expressed in 1,000 tons except for the same items named above for
Table 1.
The data are USDA estimates as of May 1995, based on various
primary data sources, and are subject to revision on a monthly
basis.
SUGAR BALANCES
This data set contains 1 file named SUGBAL.WK1 on the sugar balances
for each of the 15 former Soviet Union (FSU) countries, from
1987/88 through 1994/95. Within the file are 2 tables.
The balances consist of harvested sugar area, production of
sugar beet and sugar from beet, sugar beet yield, state purchase of
sugar beet, beginning and ending stocks of sugar, sugar imports
(total, intra-FSU, and extra-FSU), sugar exports (total, intra-FSU,
and extra-FSU), and estimated domestic sugar consumption (both in
absolute and per capita terms). All numbers are marketing year
data (September-August).
Table 1 contains sugar balances in raw value terms, with all data
expressed in 1,000 tons except for: 1) harvested area (1,000
hectares); 2) sugar beet yield (tons per hectare); and 3) per capita
consumption (kilograms per year).
Table 2 contains sugar balances in white value terms, with all data
expressed in 1,000 tons except for the same items named above for
Table 1.
The figures are USDA estimates as of May 1995, based on various
primary data sources, and are subject to revision on a monthly
basis.
