The data on this diskette are taken from the ERS publication Corn:
State-level production costs, characteristics, and input use, 1991.
Users should refer to this publication and other given references for a
better understanding of ERS' objectives, data sources, and estimation
procedures. The data consist of 1991 production cost and return
estimates along with coefficients of variation, input use,
characteristics, and machinery use for 10 corn producing States. These
estimates should be used for general discussion only, because
statistical reliability diminishes for estimates below the regional and
U.S. level due to sample size. Coefficients of variation indicate the
statistical reliability of each estimate.

The diskette has 5 Lotus 1-2-3, spreadsheet files (.WK1):
1. The "BUDGET" file contains the 1991 production costs and returns
data, along with coefficients of variation by selected State. Note 'na'
in the table means not applicable.

2. The "CONF_INT" file contains the 95-percent confidence interval for
total cash and economic costs by selected State.

3. The "CHARACTR" file contains the characteristics of FCRS corn farms
for 10 corn producing States. Note '*' in the table indicates less
than 5 percent.

4. The "INPUTS" file contains the quantities of selected inputs used in
the production of corns in 1991 by selected State. Note '*' in the
table indicates less than 5 percent.

5. The "MACHINES" file contains the type and size of machines,times-
over, and tractor (horsepower)used in the production of corn in 1991 by
selected State.

When using this file please note:

Machine operations listed are not in sequence.

Machines used in custom field operations are excluded.

Machines are repeated because they are different in size
or pulled by tractors of different size (horsepower).

-- = Indicates machines are self-powered or pulled by truck.

Width = Indicates the swath or width of the area covered
by the machine, which is not necessarily the structural
                width of the machine.

Times-over = Total acres covered in an operation divided by
planted acres of the crop. Note that hours per
acre given for land forming equipment such as
backhoe, disk boarder maker, ditcher, ditch closer,
levee plow disk, rear-mounted blade, and quarter
                     drain machines.
