This disk contains every table appearing in the 1993 edition of the
publication "Asia and Pacific Rim Situation and Outlook". Note that
Table 30 is available only as a WordPerfect 5.1 file. All the other
printed tables were translated from their original format (Quattro Pro 5
for Windows files) into Lotus files. The translation lost all
formatting information and converted almost every formula into a fixed
value. Most of the Appendix tables contained two "pages" -- a "data"
page with numbers in a crude format, and a "table" page carefully laid
out for publication in the report. Generally the published table did
not have room for all the years of statistics present in the data page.
For that reason, and because the fancy formatting was lost in
translation anyway, the data page is normally more useful than the table
page. Each two-page appendix table in Quattro format was converted into
two Lotus tables. For example, Appendix Table 2 became ATABLE2A.WK1 and
ATABLE2B.WK1. The "2A" indicates the first page of Appendix Table 2
(that is, the data page). Because the published tables were printed in
proportional fonts, textual labels may be truncated when printed in the
typewriter-style, fixed-pitch fonts used in Lotus WK1 files. Widening
the column with the truncated text should resolve that problem. Text
which is centered over multiple columns in the original Quattro file
(typically indicating units of measure, such as "1,000 tons") is
[mis]aligned left in the translated spreadsheet. Although the Lotus
translations are messier than the originals, they include every number
and every label from the Quattro files.
The document which included these tables, the "Asia and Pacific Rim
Situation and Outlook Report" for 1993, can be ordered from ERS-NASS (1-
800-999-6779). Ask for ERS Publication RS-93-7 ($9.00 domestic or
$11.25 foreign). You can subscribe to the annual series of six regional
reports, covering world agriculture, for $20 domestic or $25 foreign.
You also may wish to subscribe to "Foreign Agricultural Trade of the
United States (FATUS)" -- a source of data for many of the present
tables. A year's subscription (including six bimonthly issues plus two
annual supplements) costs $29.00 in the United States and $36.25
elsewhere. ERS/NASS distributes a free "Reports" catalog that lists
both paper publications and data products like these files.
