      FARM OPERATING AND FINANCIAL CHARACTERISTICS, 1990

Data on this diskette mirror the tables published in Statistical
Bulletin No. 860 (of the same title), by Susan E. Bentley of the 
Agriculture and Rural Economy Division, Economic Research Service,
U.S. Department of Agriculture, (August 1993). 

                          Abstract

These tables contain summarized data on operating and financial
characteristics, including farm business income, expenses, assets, and
liabilities, by farm size, region, production specialty, tenure, farm
organization, and selected operator characteristics.  The data are for
calendar year 1990 and were collected in the 1990 Farm Costs and
Returns Survey (FCRS). The FCRS is a probability survey.  Estimates
from the survey differ from data that would have been obtained if a
complete enumeration had been taken.  For the FCRS, the reliability of
an estimate can be measured by its standard error; the larger the
standard error, the lower the reliability of the estimate.  Dividing
the standard error by the estimate (and multiplying by 100) gives the
relative standard error (RSE) expressed as a percent.  RSE's for
estimates of totals are given in tables 1-54; RSE's for the estimated
number of farms reporting are noted if they exceed 25 percent. In some
instances, not enough farms reported a particular item, and, in these
cases, the data were not disclosed because the estimate is not
statistically reliable.
