This diskette contains monthly data on U.S. agricultural exports and
imports. The database includes about 175 commodities or commodity
categories for exports, and about 165 for imports.  The commodity
coverage approximates that presented in U.S. Agricultural Trade Update,
a monthly newsletter published by the Commodity and Trade Analysis
Branch, Commodity Economics Division, Economic Research Service, U.S.
Department of Agriculture.  The data originates from the Bureau of the
Census (BUCEN), U.S. Department of Commerce.
 
The data are presented in LOTUS 1-2-3 (Release 2.1).  The files include:

 
EXP90_94.ZIP   U.S. agricultural exports, quantity and value, monthly    
               from October 1990 through December 1994.
IMP90_94.ZIP   U.S. agricultural imports, quantity and value, monthly 
               from October 1990 through December 1994. 
EXPORT90.WK1   U.S. agricultural exports, quantity and value, monthly    
               from January 1990 through December 1990, plus the totals  
               for the  1988/89 fiscal year and the 1990 calendar year. 
IMPORT90.WK1   U.S. agricultural imports by quantity and value, monthly  
               from January 1990 to December 1990, plus the totals for   
               the 1989/90 fiscal year and the 1990 calendar year. 
EXPORT89.WK1   U.S. agricultural exports by quantity and value, monthly  
               from October 1988 to December 1989, plus the totals for   
               the 1989/90 fiscal year and the 1989 calendar year. 
IMPORT89.WK1   U.S. agricultural imports by quantity and value, monthly  
               from October 1988 to December 1989, plus the totals for   
               the 1988/89 fiscal year and the 1989 calendar year. 
EXPORT88.WK1   U.S. agricultural exports by quantity and value, monthly  
               from October 1987 to December 1988, plus the totals for   
               the 1987/88 fiscal year and the 1988 calendar year. 
IMPORT88.WK1   U.S. agricultural imports by quantity and value, monthly  
               from October 1987 to December 1988, plus the totals for   
               the 1987/88 fiscal year and the 1988 calendar year. 
 
The preliminary monthly data issued by BUCEN is subject to revision. 
Thus, the data for 1994 is preliminary monthly data from BUCEN.  The
files include both fiscal and calendar year totals of the preliminary
data, as well as fiscal and calendar totals which incorporate the most
recent revisions.  The files for the previous years present revised
monthly data. 
 
Effective January 1990, statistics on U.S. exports to Canada are based
on the more accurate Canadian statistics on imports from the United
States.  U.S. statistics on agricultural exports to Canada have
underreported U.S. exports by an estimated $1 billion in recent years. 
The adjustment resulted in substantial increases in the export
statistics for fruits, vegetables, meat, and some other commodity
series. 
 
Effective January 1989, the United States began reporting trade
statistics using the new international Harmonized System of trade codes. 
This caused inconsistencies to appear in the time series for some
specific commodities.  However, most categorized groups of commodities
are not significantly affected. 
 
Much more detailed U.S. agricultural trade data is published bimonthly
in Foreign Agricultural Trade of the United States (FATUS), and annually
in the FATUS Fiscal Year and Calendar Year Supplements.
