1982 COMMODITY OUTPUT BY STATE AND INPUT-OUTPUT SECTOR. JULY 1992

Consistent with the United Nations Systems of National Accounts
proposals, the United States Input-Output (I/O) accounts are constructed
using two output measures - commodity output - total economywide
production of a particular commodity and industry accounts - total
production - primary and secondary of a particular industry. This data
file presents estimates of agricultural commodity output in 1982.

Most of the data supplied to the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA),
Department of Commerce for the publication, "The 1982 Benchmark
Input-Output accounts of the United States," December 1991, for the
seventeen agricultural sectors of the base year 1982 I/O tables
originated from various Department of Agriculture state income and
expense surveys and other sources. Some of the data used is
unpublished in any other form. Provided here are a completely
additive (to published national tables) set of agricultural control
totals for the fifty states and seventeen agricultural sectors.

The output associated with the seventeen agricultural sectors are
presented on nine tables on one disk. These are: 1) total output, 2)
cash receipts, 3) additional output, 4) inventory change, 5) home
consumption, 6) non-purchased imputations, 7) additional industry
receipts, 8) BEA redefinitions out, and 9) adjusted total output.

The data on the disk is contained in both Lotus [Release 2. ](.WK1) and
[release 3.0] (.WK3) files. The files are named Table*.WK1 or .WK3 where
* = the table number shown below:

FILE TABLE
NAME NUMBER DESCRIPTION
------ ------ -------------------------------------------------------
TABLE1 1. TOTAL OUTPUT: The sum of cash receipts (Table2) and
additional output (Table3) on this disk, by State (51
columns, 50 states in alphabetical order and the U.S.
                 total)and input-output sector (18 rows, 17 agricultural
sectors plus the state or U.S. total). There are labels
and some blank rows and columns. Each subsequent table
                 is exactly the same format.

TABLE2 2. CASH RECEIPTS: Published annually by states in the ERS
publication "Economic Indicators of the Farm Sector",
series, the 'State Financial Summary', annual. The
commodity detail is aggregated into input-output sectors.
Some state cash receipt totals may not match because of a
redistribution of the difference between national input-
output and revised state cash receipts for 1982.

TABLE3 3. ADDITIONAL OUTPUT: All commodity output in addition to
cash receipts. The summation of Tables 4 through 7 on
                 this disk.

TABLE4 4. INVENTORY CHANGE: Inventory change is taken from an
unpublished compilation of subsector commodity groups
which is then aggregated to input-output sectors. The
state sector sums are additive to published national
input-output totals and state inventory change data in
                 ERS publications.

TABLE5 5. HOME CONSUMPTION: These estimates are also the estimates
of Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE), Table B. I/O
category 6., Food Produced and Consumed on Farms,
published by BEA in the National Income and Product
Accounts (NIPA), January 1992, Survey of Current Business.
From unpublished data there are national values of home
consumption for seven input-output sectors in 1982: 010100
                 (dairy), 010200 (poultry), 010301 (meat animals), 020401
                 (fruits), 020402 (nuts), 020501 (vegetables) and 020502
(sugar crops). The most recent revised data at the state
level is only detailed to the crop-livestock categories and
is not additive to the sum of the seven national control
totals given earlier to BEA. The national sector home
consumption values and state crop and livestock values, and
the residual has been adjusted to reflect state production
data and redistributed to the states equitably.

TABLE6 6. NON-PURCHASED IMPUTATIONS: The non-purchased imputations
table consists of non-purchased feed and seed, non-
purchased milk (fed to calves), non-purchased manure, and
an imputation for the value of animal work power used on
farms. This data is not published elsewhere by ERS. The
values are estimated by Input-Output analysts.

TABLE7 7. ADDITIONAL INDUSTRY RECEIPTS: The additional industry
receipts table is comprised of five sub-units: inter-farm
intra-state livestock shipments; dog sales; bull, horse
and other animal semen; tobacco seeds and plants and
custom feeding fees. The three sectors which contain
output generated by these activities are 010301 (meat
animals), 010302 (miscellaneous livestock) and 020300
(tobacco). These values are not published by state by
ERS. Most are estimated by the Input-Output analysts.

TABLE8 8. BEA REDEFINITIONS OUT: Some commodity output of the
agricultural sector is redefined by the Department of
Commerce. This occurred in five Input-Output sectors:
                 010101 (dairy), 010200 (poultry), 010301 (meat animals),
010302 (miscellaneous livestock), and 020401 (fruits).
These national total redefinitions are not published but
are reflected in the difference between the BEA 1982 base
table commodity output totals and those in Table1 on this
disk. The values are entered as negatives in this
                 spreadsheet (Table8).

Table9 9. ADJUSTED TOTAL OUTPUT: The sum of Table8 plus Table1 on
this disk. The U.S. total in Table9 equals that total
output published by BEA in "The 1982 Benchmark Input-Output
Accounts of the United States," December 1991, Table 3.
