Data files on these diskettes provide information on total number of
farms, acreages in different land uses, acreages in different land
tenure categories, gross and net farm income, and sales of commodity
groups by sales classes for 1969, 1974, 1978, and 1982. These data are
presented in terms of constant dollar sales classes in 1969 dollars.
The estimates of acreages and sales are based on estimates of farm
numbers in constant dollar terms for farms with the relevant attributes,
e.g. farms with idle cropland or farms with dairy sales. The
methodology for performing these adjustments is described in the ERS
publication STRUCTURAL CHANGE IN U.S. FARMLAND, AER-617, June, 1990.
Farm numbers, sales, net farm income and off farm income by sales class
in 1969 dollars are also estimated and included for the U.S. These
estimates are based on the published series in nominal dollars in U. S.
Dept. of Ag. "Economic Indicators of the Farm Sector: National Financial
Summary", Economic Research Service, ECIFS 5-2. The nominal data values
reported here have been adjusted in proportion to the difference between
the nominal number of farms and the estimated constant-dollar farm
numbers.
Also included are estimated farm numbers and acreages for 14 states in
three regions: the Central Cornbelt Region (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and
Ohio); the Industrial Agriculture Region (Arizona, California, Florida,
and Texas); and the Southern Coastal Region (Alabama, Georgia,
Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina). These
regions are abbreviated CB, IA, and SC, respectively, when used in the
file names listed below.
All files on these diskettes are in Lotus 1-2-3 (Release 2) worksheet
(.WK1) format. File names for the regional data are designated below by
a * in the file name: substitute CB, IA, or SC for the appropriate
regional file name.

classes
1 ACIRRGTD Acres of total irrigated farmland (includes irrigated
pasture and orchards), by sales class, 8 sales classes
1 ACOWNED Acres of farmland owned, by sales class, 8 sales classes
1 ACPERPAS Acres of permanent pasture and range, by sales class, 8

1 ACTTLAND Acres of total land in farms in all uses, by sales class,
8 sales classes. This total includes land in uses such as
idle land, land in cover crops, and waste land that does
not appear in the other land use categories. Some
adjustment and indexation bias exists in these totals
relative to the sum of the other 5 land use types
contained in this data product. See the article, "Two
Methods for Estimating Real Structural Change in
Agriculture," in the Journal of Agricultural Economics
Research, Winter 1988, Vol 41, No. 1 pp. 39-44 for a
discussion of index and adjustment bias.
