IPDS consists of a crop production database organized by a series of Lotus
1-2-3 spreadsheets and macros for use on a microcomputer. The IPDS data-
base incorporates 1984 production data for 11 commodities (corn for grain,
wheat, soybeans, cotton, rice, oats, barley, sorghum for grain, corn
silage, alfalfa hay, and other hay). Crop-specific information includes
acreage, yield, price, input use, costs, returns, and breakeven statistics
for both dryland and irrigated crop production organized by State and U.S.
farm production region.

IPDS was developed as a tool to help analyze costs and returns across
crops, States, and U.S. farm production regions. IPDS is not a budget
generator but rather a framework with which to organize, modify, and
display State-level crop production data. Adjustments in selected input
and output levels by crop, State, and region may be evaluated in a compar-
ative static framework. Potential user-specified adjustments involve com-
modity price, yield, water use, land, labor, and various irrigation costs.

                             Sales Information

To use IPDS, it is strongly recommended that the user purchase the complete
user manual which describes the database, Lotus macro procedures, and
contains sample macro runs illustrating various applications.

Order A USER'S MANUAL FOR THE IRRIGATION PRODUCTION
DATA SYSTEM (IPDS), AGES-89-10. Or call the ERS-NASS order
desk, toll free, at 1-800-999-6779 (8:30-5:00 ET).

Purchase microfiche copies ($6.95 each) from: National Technical Information
Service (NTIS), 5285 Port Royal Road, Springfield, VA 22161. Order by title
and series number. Enclose a check or money order payable to NTIS
Call NTIS at 703-487-4650 and charge your purchase to your VISA, MasterCard,
American Express, or NTIS Deposit Account. For information about email
ordering contact NTIS at: orders@ntis.fedworld.gov

The user is encouraged to print and read the short version of the manual
contained in the file MANUAL.DOC. This file is a DOS text file and can be
printed using a text editor. This file does not contain the sample macro
applications illustrated in the user's manual available from ERS-NASS
Reports or NTIS.

                  Installation of IPDS Spreadsheet Files

The three diskettes contain Lotus spreadsheet files (including macros),
DOS text files, and a program (ARCX) to unarchive files. All files on
the three diskettes should be transferred to a Lotus subdirectory on your
hard disk. The subdirectory should be at least 30.0 megabytes in size.
For a discussion of PC requirements, see the file MANUAL.DOC.

The spreadsheet files on the three diskettes have been archived and need
to be unarchived in order to be of any use. Follow the following procedures
to prepare the spreadsheets for use:

o Your parent directory for Lotus must be C:\123 on your hard disk.
Create a Lotus subdirectory (it must be named WKSFILES) on your hard
   disk as C:\123\WKSFILES.

o Copy the following three files into the subdirectory WKSFILES.

          Diskette # File
          ---------- ------------
              1 B1IPDS84.ARC
              2 B2IPDS84.ARC
              3 B3IPDS84.ARC

o Copy the unarchive program file, and the macro and DOS text files from
the subdirectory EXTRA (on diskette #2) into the Lotus subdirectory
   WKSFILES.

o From the subdirectory WKSFILES, unarchive the first set of spreadsheet
   files by typing the command:

          ARCX B1IPDS84.ARC

o Wait for the C: prompt and repeat the above command for the files
   B2IPDS84.ARC and B3IPDS84.ARC.

For a list of spreadsheet filenames, see Table 1 in the file MANUAL.DOC or
in the "User's Manual for the Irrigation Production Data System (IPDS)".

To make use of the spreadsheets requires the use of expanded memory. Refer
to the MANUAL.DOC text file or the User's Manual for a discussion of expanded
memory requirements.

To make use of the macros DIFF and COMP, the spreadsheet files need to be
transformed to value spreadsheets (see either MANUAL.DOC or the "User's
Manual for the Irrigation Production Data System (IPDS)". Also, the macros
COMP and DIFF in the macro SCENAR use the value spreadsheets. (The macros
SCENAR (without COMP and DIFF), SCENARI, and SCENARD all access the spread-
sheet files directly.) To create value spreadsheets, activate the VUPDATE
macro using the following procedures:

o From Lotus, set the default directory as C:\123\WKSFILES.

o From Lotus, retrieve the file VUPDATE.WKS.

o Activate the macro by simultaneously striking the "Alt" and "A" keys.
(The expanded memory simulator must be activated.)

Value spreadsheets are automatically stored on permanent disk (subdirectory
WKSFILES) for both irrigated and dryland crops. Value spreadsheet names are
preceded by a "V". For example, V501A is the value filename for irrigated
wheat.

You are now ready to make use of IPDS. Refer to the file MANUAL.DOC or the
report "User's Manual for the Irrigation Production Data System (IPDS)" for
further discussion.

To save space, it is recommended that you use your original archived spread-
sheets on the three diskettes as your backup copy and erase the archived files
(B1IPDS84.ARC, B2IPDS84.ARC, and B3IPDS84.ARC) from the subdirectory WKSFILES.
