East European Situation and Outlook Tables
This database contains all the tables that appear in Nancy J. Cochrane
and Miles J. Lambert, Agricultural Performance in Eastern Europe, 1988,
ERS Staff Report No. AGES 89-38 and the 1987 and previous annual
editions of Eastern Europe: Situation and Outlook Report. Most of the
tables contain all available data back to 1971 and are thus
far more comprehensive than any of the published tables.
These tables contain data on area and production of major crops,
livestock inventories, production of livestock products, total
agricultural trade and trade in major commodities, and U.S. total and
agricultural trade with Eastern Europe. The countries covered in these
tables are Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, German Democratic Republic (GDR),
Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Yugoslavia. Data on Albania are so
scarce that they are not included.
The data are taken from the yearbooks of the respective countries, the
yearbook of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA), the
Annual Trade yearbooks of the Foad and Agricultural Organization (FAO)
of the United Nations, and 1987 plan fulfillment reports as reported in
the countries' press. Other sources are noted as appropriate.
Metric units are used throughout:
One metric ton = 2,204.6 pounds
One kilogram = 2.2046 pounds
One hectare = 2.471 acres
Cattlehides: one piece = 22 kilograms
Milk: one liter = 1.031 kilograms
A list of the filenames and titles of the tables follows. The tables
have been renumbered to match those in the Staff Report cited above.
