Land use change data originates from photointerpretation of over 21,000
sample points paired to two dates of photography for the early 1970s and the
early 1980s. Additional sample points were coded for Federal land, but were
not photointerpreted. Earth Satellite Corporation completed the
photointerpretation project, March 1988, under contract with the Economic
Research Service (ERS). For study methods and data collection procedures
see:
Vesterby, Marlow. Land Use Change in Fast-Growth Counties: Analysis of
Study Methods. Staff Report No. AGES880510. Economic Research Service,
U.S. Department of Agriculture. 1988.
Data for four regions are available on 3.5" disks:
1. East and North Central
2. Southeast
3. West
4. Pacific States
Regions have been combined together on 2-3.5" disks. Disks have d-BASE III
as thestandard format, but these files can be translated into LOTUS 1-2-3,
Symphony, and other spreadsheet or data base management programs.
README FILE -- East and North Central Region
These files contain data on land use change for the decade of the
1970s for 39 areas (36 counties and 3 Virginia independent cities) in the
East and North Central region in the United States. Areas include those
experiencing rapid population growth in the 1970s (fast growth, type FG),
those that had large losses of cropland accompanied by moderate population
growth (cropland loss, type CL), and those that gained substantial amounts
of cropland accompanied by population growth (cropland gain, type CG). (See
attachment 1).
File names for thIS region are:
EAST.DBF, NORH_CNT.DBF (eastern and north central US)
Counties are listed by FIPS code. For example,
Howard County, Maryland, is 24027 (attachment 2).
Column codes are:
STATE - State FIPS code COUNTY - County FIPS code
MCDCCD - Census Division EUSE - Early use (see codes below)
LUSE - Late use (see codes below) SCS - Soil Mapping Unit code
EYEAR - Date of early photo LYEAR - Date of late photo
AC/PT - Average acres per sample point
Photos and maps, containing sample points, are on file at ERS. Land use
codes, for columns labeled EUSE and LUSE, are:
Code Use Code Use
11 Residential 40 Forest
12 Commercial and Industrial 50 Water < 40 acres
14 Transportation, Communication, Utilities 60 Wetland
16 Mixed Urban 70 Barren
21 Cropland and pasture 76 Land in Transition
22 Orchards and Horticultural CC Cloud Cover
23 Confined Feeding and other Agricultural WC Water Cover > 40 acres
30 Range PC Photo Coverage Missing
31 Brushy Pasture FL Federal Land
Unknown/Miscoded
Soil mapping units, for the column labeled "SCS," are present only where
land use has changed from or to cropland and pasture. Soil interpretation
codes are available from Soil Survey Reports for each county from the Soil
Conservation Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Sample sizes are too small to provide reliable information at the county
level. Combining counties for a total of 5,000 or more sample points would
ordinarily provide reliable information on most land use classes. Similar
computerized data on land use change for the decade of the 1960s is available
from ERS.
