The statistical tables contained on these diskettes are nearly
identical to the appendix tables published in the appendices of ERS
Statistical Bulletin Number 821, March 1991. Nearly all data
included in this electronic data set were obtained from printed
publications and electronic data bases compiled and maintained
primarily by agencies in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Data and estimates for 8 additional commodities and two additional
years have been added to the original set for 9-commodities,
published as ERS Staff Report No. AGES880527. The original title
"Fresh Fruits and Vegetables: Some Characteristics of the U.S.
Market for 9 Selected Imports, 1975-85" was printed in June 1988.

Production and utilization estimates were developed primarily from
crop reports published by the National Agricultural Statistics
Service (NASS) and the Economic Research Service (ERS), USDA.
Population estimates published by the U.S. Department of Commerce
were used to compute per capita consumption and use estimates.
Wholesale prices and shipments data were obtained from published
reports prepared by the Fruit and Vegetable Market News Service,
Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), USDA. Imports and exports
were compiled from published reports and unpublished electronic
data bases maintained by the ERS, USDA. Imports by Port of entry
were downloaded by ERS staff from U.S. trade files maintained by
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) by ERS Staff.

Commodity definitions for U.S. imports and exports for each
commodity may also be found in selected calendar year supplements
to "Foreign Agricultural Trade of the United States" (FATUS) a
bimonthly series with two annual supplements, published by ERS,
USDA for more than two decades.

This electronic database contains Lotus 1-2-3 worksheet files which
can be easily accessed with standard commands. Most of the files
were originally created under Lotus 1-2-3 Release 1A, on IBM
compatible P.C.'s but all worksheets were updated and finalized
under Release 2.01.

The standard data units are metric tons and U.S. dollars.
Wholesale Market prices are in both US dollars per pound or
standard shipping carton.

These files do not contain any picture files. Freelance Plus,
release # 3.0 was used for the graphics in the Statistical
Bulletin.

The commodity names and prefixes used in the preliminary files for
this series were:

    Avocados AV Broccoli BR
