This data package consists of two files in LOTUS format. These files contain
weekly data from Soviet newspapers on the area of grains sown. The data are
given as of each Monday, indicated by an *. In many cases, the weekly data were
interpolated in the file.
File FALLSEED.WK1 contains data for fall seeded grains, 1980-91. File
SPRINGSE.WK1 contains data for spring seeded grains, 1971-91.
In 1989-91, the Soviets provided little information on spring seeding progress.
The information on fall sowing was more complete, except for in 1991.
Information on harvesting (which is covered in another ERS data set), however,
has become more detailed.
