This disk contains state-level time series data for corn, grain sorghum,
oats, and barley, for 1949-1986. Variables include acreage, yield,
production, farm disposition, season average price, and value. Data in the
accompanying tables are defined according to a six-letter naming convention:
CCVVSS
where CC is the crop code, VV is the variable code, and SS is the state or
region code. These codes are defined in the following tables. For example,
CNAHTX is corn area harvested for grain in Texas. Units appear in each
spreadsheet table. Sources of these data are found in the attached reference
list.
CROP CODES
CF - Corn Forage SF - Sorghum Forage BL - Barley
CN - Corn for Grain SG - Sorghum for Grain OT - Oats
CS - Corn Silage SS - Sorghum for Silage
VARIABLE CODES
AH - Area Harvested. Area Harvested for forage includes hogged or grazed
and that cut and fed without removing grain;
AP - Area Planted (for barley or oats);
PA - Area Planted for All Purposes (for corn or sorghum);
PR - Season Average Price Received by Farmers for 1949-1985; Marketing Year
Average Price for 1986. Includes an allowance for loans outstanding
and purchases by the government valued at the average loan and purchase
rate, by state. Also includes, for 1964-1974, price support payments
but does not include payments for acreage diversion, conservation
practices, soil bank, etc..
QP - Quantity Produced;
SL - Quantity Sold (Estimates Discontinued after the 1978 Crop);
UF - Quantity Used on Farms Where Produced (Estimates Discontinued after the
1978 Crop);
VP - Value of Production (Includes the same allowances as PR);
VS - Value of Sales (Estimates Discontinued After the 1978 Crop); and,
YH - Yield per Harvested Acre.

APPENDIX
LOTUS(c) SPREADSHEETS FOR FEED GRAINS
Data for feed grains are set up in twelve LOTUS(c) spreadsheets, one for each
region plus one for U.S. totals. Spreadsheets have the naming convention
CRNSS.WKS,
SRGSS.WKS,
BRLSS.WKS, or,
OTSSS.WKS
where SS is the region code, as defined earlier. States are arranged within
each regional spreadsheet alphabetically according to the two-letter state
abbreviation code. Ranges for each set of state data use the same naming
convention as above, where SS is the state code.
