Project: The Role of Time Use in Promoting Healthy Energy Balance
Award Year: 2007
Amount of award, fiscal 2007: $100,000.00
Institution: University of Utah
Principal Investigator: Cathleen Zick
Status: Ongoing
Detailed Objective: Over the past 30 years, the prevalence of obesity and overweight has risen dramatically among Americans of all ages, resulting in increased prevalence of diabetes and other chronic health problems and adding to health care costs. This study will examine trends in time use and food consumption to gain insights into the changes in energy balance that have led to the increased prevalence of obesity. Data from the 2006 American Time Use Survey (ATUS) and the 1975-76 Time Use in Economic and Social Accounts (TUESA) Study will be used to assess time spent in food-related and physical activities. In addition, USDA data series on food availability and consumption will provide insights into changes in energy intake. The study will investigate the time that individuals spend in food-related and physical activities in 1975-76 versus 2006. A household production model of energy balance will be used to gain an understanding of the effect of economic factors, such as wage rates, food stamp eligibility/participation, prices, and income, on energy balance-related time use. The extent to which time use contributes to the production of energy balance-both the risk of being overweight or obese and Body Mass Index-will be assessed. Results should be useful to the design of programs and policies to curb the increasing prevalence of obesity.
