Detailed Objective: This project will examine the neighborhood, school, household, and individual factors associated with participation in USDA's free or reduced-price school meals programs-the School Breakfast Program and the National School Lunch Program-and determine the association of school meal participation with weight status and dietary behaviors. The study will address an important gap in knowledge concerning factors that influence the decision to participate in USDA's free or reduced-price school meals program and the consequences of school meals participation. A model of school meals participation as a function of individual and household characteristics, school characteristics, community food prices, and availability of grocery, convenience, restaurant, and fast-food outlets will be estimated using a new data set, the 2002-03 Child Development Supplement of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID).
