Project: WIC Innovative Practices Study
Award Year: 2002
Amount of award, fiscal 2002: $149,747.00
Institution: Mathematica Policy Resesarch, Inc.
Principal Investigator: Anne Gordon
Status: Completed
Detailed Objective: This study examines and presents detailed information on a range of innovations and promising practices in WIC. Some have suggested that WIC should allow local agencies to experiment with practices aimed at providing more intensive services to specific groups. Although some innovative practices are already in place in local WIC agencies, little is known about them overall. The study will examine innovative practices now in place, the circumstances under which these practices were implemented, and whether they are applicable to WIC programs in other areas. Programs of special interest include those that promote breastfeeding, immunization, or well-child care; that address obesity prevention; or that involve home visitation services or WIC nutrition education services.

The study includes interviews with State and local WIC directors, along with site visits to the more promising programs. State and tribal WIC directors and other WIC experts will be contacted and asked to describe innovative practices in their jurisdictions. Twenty programs will be selected for further study. Telephone interviews with directors of local WIC agencies offering these programs will obtain details about program operations. Five programs will be selected for site visits, to more fully explore implementation issues and determine whether the programs are replicable.
