|Detailed Objective: This project supports the work of the Uses Subcommittee of the National Academy
of Sciences (NAS) in providing guidance to scientists, researchers, health professionals,
and practitioners on the interpretations and uses of the new Dietary Reference
Intakes (DRIs). The work will address the use of dietary micronutrient recommendations
and reference intakes for individuals and their applicability for assessing intakes
of populations, formulation of appropriate dietary standards, and the research
needed on which to base such policy decisions. The Recommended Dietary Allowances
(RDAs) are gradually being replaced by the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI), which
provide users with four types of reference values: Estimated Average Requirements
(EARs), Recommended Dietary Allowances, Adequate Intakes (AIs), and Tolerable
Upper Intake Levels (ULs). Each reference value has a different intended use.
Because adoption of DRIs represents a major shift from the use of RDAs, the Institute
of Medicine established a Subcommittee on Interpretation and Uses of Dietary Reference
Intakes to focus specifically on the application of the new DRIs. The Subcommittee
will develop recommendations in four major areas:
- the appropriate uses of DRIs to assess or monitor the intakes of groups and
of individuals, including specific applications to food assistance programs;
- appropriate uses of DRIs to plan for intakes by groups and by individuals,
both to achieve sufficiency and to avoid potential adverse effects from high
- specific applications for each of the nutrient groups, including those already
- appropriate uses of DRIs in nutrition education efforts.
The Economic Research Service provided $100,000 in fiscal 1999 and $261,008 in fiscal 2001 in support of the project through a collaborative effort with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
