U.S. meat exports continue to increase
Strong U.S. meat exports have accounted for a growing share of meat demand over most of the past 20 years. Beef exports fell sharply in 2004 following the discovery of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in December 2003. Even with the growth in meat exports, domestic consumption of meats remains the dominant use, accounting for about 84 percent of U.S. use over the past 5 years.
