County Typology Codes
To provide policy-relevant information about diverse county conditions, ERS has developed county-level typology codes that capture differences in economic and social characteristics.

The 2004 County Typology Codes were developed for all 3,141 counties, county equivalents, and independent cities in the United States. Their primary function is to help differentiate among nonmetro counties, but metro counties are also coded.

The 2004 County Typology codes classify all U.S. counties according to six non-overlapping categories of economic dependence and seven overlapping categories of policy-relevant themes. The economic types include farming, mining, manufacturing, services, Federal/State government, and unspecialized counties. The policy types include housing stress, low education, low employment, persistent poverty, population loss, nonmetro recreation, and retirement destination. In addition, a code identifying counties with persistent child poverty is available.

For more information on the ERS county typology, see http://www.ers.usda.gov/briefing/rurality/typology/.

Creative Class County Codes
The creative class thesis—that towns need to attract engineers, architects, artists, and people in other creative occupations to compete in today's economy—may be particularly relevant to rural communities, which tend to lose much of their talent when young adults leave. The ERS creative class codes indicate a county's share of population employed in occupations that require "thinking creatively." A separate break-out of employment in the arts is also included. Data are provided for all counties in the U.S. for 1990 and 2000.

Rural/Urban Continuum Codes
The Rural-urban Continuum Codes allow researchers working with county data to break such data into finer residential groups beyond a simple metro-nonmetro dichotomy, particularly for the analysis of trends in nonmetro areas that may be related to degree of rurality and metro proximity. The codes form a classification scheme that distinguishes metropolitan (metro) counties by the population size of their metro area, and nonmetropolitan (nonmetro) counties by degree of urbanization and adjacency to a metro area or areas. The metro and nonmetro categories have been subdivided into three metro and six nonmetro groupings, resulting in a nine-part county codification. Data available for 2003, 1993, 1983 and 1974.

Season-Average Price Forecasts
A futures-price forecasting model is used to provide season-average price forecasts for corn, soybeans, and wheat. In addition to the monthly forecasts for prices received, the model computes a forecast for the counter-cyclical payment rate for each commodity. The 2002 Farm Act provides for counter-cyclical payments when prices are below specified levels.

State Export Data
Annual estimates of U.S. exports by State and commodity group based on each States' share of U.S. agricultural production. These ERS estimates are based on two key sources of data. Export data are national-level Foreign Agricultural Trade of the United States (FATUS) data from USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service, which are not separable by State. ERS also uses State-level historical production data from USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service to determine State export shares for U.S. crops and livestock. Using these approximations, a State that is the largest producer of an agricultural commodity will also account for the largest share of U.S. exports of that commodity. Compared with other estimates, these estimates of State of export origin tend to be more accurate for agricultural commodities and do not inflate the relative exports from port States or undercount those of inland States.

Urban Influence Codes
ERS announces the release of the 2003 Urban Influence Codes, which classify U.S. counties by size of each county’s largest town and nearness to metropolitan and micropolitan areas. This scheme allows researchers to break county data down into smaller residential groups than metro, micro, and nonmetro. This is particularly useful for the analysis of trends in nonmetro areas that are related to population density and metro influence. The codes divide the Nation's 3,141 counties, county equivalents, and independent cities into 12 groups.

WTO Agricultural Trade Policy Commitments Database
At the conclusion of the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations in 1995, members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) established a broad set of rules and disciplines in the Agreement on Agriculture, governing three key areas affecting agricultural trade policy: domestic support, export subsidies, and market access. This database contains data on implementation of agricultural policy commitments by WTO members. Export subsidy data indicate the type of export subsidies, expenditures on export subsidies, and the quantity of subsidized exports during a given year by WTO members. Domestic support data detail the type and amount of support WTO members have provided annually. Market access data contain information on tariff commitments and their implementation by presenting bound tariff levels and tariff-rate quotas agreed to in the Uruguay Round, as well as applied annual tariff rates (i.e., the tariff rates published by national customs authorities for duty administration purposes).
