Agricultural Chemicals and Production Technology: Recommended Data Products

Adoption of Genetically Engineered Crops in the U.S.—This data product summarizes the extent of adoption of herbicide-tolerant and insect-resistant genetically engineered crops in the United States. Data cover GE varieties of corn, cotton, and soybeans over the 2000-2007 period, by State.

Crop Production Practices—This web-based delivery tool allows the user to create customized data summaries based on information collected through a series of field-level commodity surveys. Also known as Phase II of the Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS), this series is USDA's primary source of information about the current status and trends in crop production practices for several large-acreage crops (corn, soybeans, wheat, and cotton). This survey also obtains data on U.S. farmers' agricultural resource use, as well as data to assess potential environmental impacts associated with crop production practices. The ARMS survey yields annual data summaries for field-level data by crop, including: chemicals and seeds, equipment, previous crops, highly erodible land, irrigation, and pest, nutrient and crop residue management practices. Customized data summaries can be generated for production years beginning in 1996.

U.S. Organic Agricultural Production in 2005 —In 2005, for the first time, all 50 States in the U.S. had some certified organic farmland. This data set provides information on organic operations and acreage for crops and livestock (over 40 commodities), with some tables dating back to 1992. Data for 2000-2005 also include the number of certified operations, by State (12/06).

Cropping practices—Unsummarized archived data from the 1990-95 USDA Cropping Practices Survey. Included are data on nutrient and pesticide use, tillage practices, and related data for major field crops.

Fertilizer Use and Price Statistics—U.S. fertilizer use and prices and nutrients applied per acre for major farm States, 1964-latest available, for corn, cotton, soybeans, and wheat.

U.S. Fertilizer Imports/Exports—This system provides annual data on U.S. imports and exports of selected fertilizer types. These data are based on "U.S. Merchandise Imports and Exports" released monthly by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Foreign Trade Division. The Economic Research Service (ERS), in collaboration with The Fertilizer Institute, updates the data monthly and maintains the year-to-date fertilizer files. The data reported here are drawn from these files. The system covers imports from 1995 to date and exports from 1990 to date for 26 major fertilizer products and materials, and for 82 major trading countries.

Confined Animal and Manure Nutrient Data System—This system provides state and National data about confined animal numbers and associated manure nutrients. Data are accessible as a series of downloadable Excel files by year and animal type with each file providing all available data for each state, or as customized reports within 7 standard formats allowing selection of the desired years, geographic areas, animal types, confinement status, and data items. These data are based on analysis of the data collected for the 1982, 1987, 1992, and 1997 Censuses of Agriculture done by the Economic Research Service and Natural Resources Conservation Service in conjunction with the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Agricultural Chemical Usage—State and U.S. fertilizer and pesticide use data for various commodities.

Agricultural chemical use on field crops—State and U.S. fertilizer and pesticide use data for corn, cotton, soybeans, wheat, and fall potatoes. Includes pesticide use by active ingredient, application rates, and acres treated. Also includes data on target pest by pesticide active ingredient for fall potatoes beginning with the 1992 data.
