Market Analysis for the 21st Century

New fiscal year 2008 funding provides ERS with the resources needed to Strengthen and Extend its Market Analysis and Outlook Program and thereby provide the world-class analysis necessary for 21st century agricultural markets.

Overview

Year-to-date exports, at $68 billion, are up 45 percent over the first 7 months (October-April) of fiscal 2007, with bulk commodities up 73 percent and high-value products up 28 percent. The largest increases were for wheat, dairy products, vegetable oils, soybeans, and corn. Sorghum shipments are more than double the first 7 months of fiscal 2007. Reflecting normal seasonal patterns, exports of grains and soybeans slowed in April, bringing down the monthly export value by nearly $1 billion from March to $9.7 billion. April’s bulk product exports declined by 18 percent from March levels to $4.2 billion. High-value products, which account for more than half the total value, remained unchanged at $5.5 billion.

E-mail Notification

Readers of ERS outlook reports have two ways they can receive an e-mail notice about release of reports and associated data.

  • Receive timely notification (soon after the report is posted on the web) via USDA’s Economics, Statistics and Market Information System (which is housed at Cornell University’s Mann Library). Go to the system's E-mail Delivery of Reports page and follow the instructions to receive e-mail notices about ERS, Agricultural Marketing Service, National Agricultural Statistics Service, and World Agricultural Outlook Board products.

  • Receive weekly notification (on Friday afternoon) via the ERS website. Go to ERS's E-mail Updates page and follow the instructions to receive notices about ERS outlook reports, Amber Waves magazine, and other reports and data products on specific topics. ERS also offers RSS (really simple syndication) feeds for all ERS products.

Process

ERS outlook is a component of a larger USDA Process of developing and disseminating forecasts. Learn more about the process, players, and other outputs.
