Rural street scene in China Rural China—shift from food growing to buying (July 25, 2005)
Over 60 percent of China's consumers live on farms. While rural households rely on self-produced commodities for a large share of their food, this pattern has been changing since the mid-1990s, with purchases of food in rural China growing by 7.4 percent annually.
