Product Overview
This data product presents select results on the procurement
and contracting of organic products from the 2004 Nationwide
Survey of Organic Manufacturers, Processors, and Distributors.
The survey of certified organic handlers was conducted
in 2005-06, and examined marketing and procurement practices
in 2004.
Why This Product Is Important
Understanding transactions within the supply chain for
organic commodities and products has been impeded by
lack of data. Unlike most conventionally grown agricultural
products, very little official information about organic
production and marketing channels is available. As a
result, many producers are required to make marketing
and production decisions based on incomplete market information.
The survey of certified organic intermediaries was conducted
to overcome the lack of information on procuring and
marketing organic products.
This data product provides information about what handlers
are looking for from their suppliers, as well as what
assistance they offer to their suppliers. Understanding
how organic products are procured and the use of contracts
makes it possible for farmers to better manage their
marketing risk, while policymakers and researchers will
benefit from the results of the first systematic look
at the organic supply chain.
