Interstate Livestock Movements: Regional Flows

Contents

Regional livestock movements are approximated by compiling data from State certificates of veterinary inspection for animals destined for feeding or breeding purposes and exclude animals for immediate slaughter. Since source-destination data are not tabulated for all States, shipping patterns generated from these data underestimate actual flows, and hence only provide a general sense of livestock movements. For more information, see the Source Report and Data Questions and Answers.

Regional Flow Data

On each map below, shipments out of a region are compared with births in that region to illustrate the extent of movements. For example, the Mountain region ships a large number of cattle to other regions (2.7 million head) relative to its calf crop (5.6 million head). In contrast, because it has substantial feeding operations within the region, the Corn Belt ships fewer cattle (0.8 million head) compared with its calf crop (4.2 million head).
