Price Spreads from Farm to Consumer

Contents

At-Home Foods by Commodity Group

ERS compares farm and retail prices for foods belonging to each of several commodity groups. Use the links below to select commodity group data:

Fruits and vegetables

  • For a fresh fruit market basket and a fresh vegetables market basket, ERS estimates both farm share and the farm-to-retail price spread. Both baskets are based on what households bought at retail food stores in 1999-2003.

  • Data for individual fresh foods can be found in ERS's Vegetables and Melons Situation and Outlook Yearbook as well as in the Fruit and Tree Nut Situation and Outlook Yearbook.

  • For processed foods, ERS makes comparisons for a processed fruits and vegetables market basket, based on what households bought in 1982-84, as well as for a few individual foods.
