2The 2003 Rural-urban continuum codes classify metropolitan counties (codes 1 through 3) by size of the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), and nonmetropolitan counties (codes 4 through 9) by degree of urbanization and proximity to metro areas. 4For 1970 and 1980, the share of adults with less than high school includes those who had not completed the 12th grade. In 1990 and 2000, the share includes those who did not receive a high school diploma or its equivalent (such as a GED).
