Since 2003, ERS and Farm
Foundation have co-sponsored annual workshops to review
progress of PREISM-funded projects and provide a forum
for dialogue on economic issues associated with agricultural
invasive species. The workshops bring together academic
researchers, representatives from a variety of Federal
agencies, and other stakeholders concerned with managing
agricultural invasive species.
2007 PREISM Workshop
ERS's Program of Research on the Economics of Invasive
Species Management (PREISM), an annual competitive grant
and cooperative agreement program that focuses on national
decisionmaking concerning agricultural invasive species,
will hold its 2007 workshop on October 18-19 (Thursday
and Friday), at ERS.
The workshop will bring together researchers, program
administrators, policymakers, and other stakeholders concerned
with the management of invasive species. The keynote speaker
will be Dr.
David Lodge, Professor at the University of Notre
Dame and Director of the Center for Aquatic Conservation.
Another featured speaker will be Dr.
Mark Sagoff, Senior Research Scholar and Acting Director,
Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy, University
of Maryland.

2006 PREISM Workshop
ERS and Farm Foundation sponsored a workshop on October
19-20, 2006, to discuss progress and findings of selected
PREISM studies funded from 2003 through 2005. The workshop
brought together researchers, program administrators,
policymakers, and other stakeholders concerned with the
management of invasive species, including foreign animal
diseases. The keynote speaker was Dr. Gary Smith, Chief,
Epidemiology and Public Health, University of Pennsylvania
School of Veterinary Medicine. Another featured speaker
was be Dr. Simon Kenyon, extension veterinarian, Purdue

2005 PREISM Workshop
On October 20-21, 2005, ERS and Farm Foundation co-sponsored
a review of progress and findings of studies funded by
PREISM in 2003 and 2004. Highlights of the workshop included
a keynote speech by John Mumford of the Imperial College
of London, titled Consistent Frameworks for Evolving Biosecurity
Decisions, and a luncheon speech by Alan Burdick, senior
editor of Discover Magazine, titled Why Not Love Aliens?
What Invasive Species Can Tell Us about How Nature Does—and
Doesn't—Work. The workshop was conducted in ERS's
Waugh Conference Center in Washington, DC, and attended
by about 100 people from government agencies, universities,

2004 PREISM Workshop
ERS and Farm Foundation co-sponsored a review of progress
and findings of studies funded by PREISM in 2003 in ERS's
Waugh Conference Center in Washington, DC, on August 19-20,
2004. A highlight of the conference was a keynote speech
by Charles Perrings, University of York, England, titled
Globalization and Invasive Species: Economic Insights
from Theoretical Ecology. About 90 people from government
agencies, universities, and nongovernment organizations

2003 PREISM Workshop
More than 100 industry leaders, government regulators,
biological scientists, and researchers attended this workshop
on May 12 and 13, 2003, in Washington, DC, which announced
the first PREISM competitive awards program. Speakers
and attendees discussed issues related to the effects
of invasive species on U.S. livestock, crop production,
and ecosystems, as well as implications for policies and
programs to prevent or control invasive species.
