Food Marketing System in the U.S.: Recommended Data

Contents

Food Dollar Series—The food dollar series measures annual expenditures by U.S. consumers on domestically produced food. This data series is composed of three primary series—the marketing bill series, the industry group series, and the primary factor series—that shed light on different aspects of the food supply chain. The three series show three different ways to split up the same food dollar. Data are available from 1993 to 2008 and will be updated annually.

Fruit and Vegetable Prices—How much do fruits and vegetables cost? ERS estimated average prices for 153 commonly consumed fresh and processed fruits and vegetables. Reported estimates include each product’s average retail price per pound and per edible cup equivalent (the unit of measurement for Federal fruit and vegetable consumption recommendations). ERS calculated average prices at retail stores using 2008 Nielsen Homescan data. Retail quantities were further adjusted for the removal of inedible parts and cooking loss.

ERS food expenditures—This series provides valuable information on how consumers spend their food dollar and how their consumption patterns change over time. ERS estimates current sales or receipts by each type of store that sells food to obtain its aggregate food expenditure series.

Price Spreads from Farm to Consumer—ERS compares prices paid by consumers for food with prices received by farmers for corresponding commodities. This data product reports these comparisons for a variety of foods sold through retail foodstores such as supermarkets and supercenters.

The National Household Food Acquisition and Purchase Survey (FoodAPS)—ERS's newly funded survey will provide unique and detailed data about household food choices that are not available in any other survey. FoodAPS is a nationally representative survey of household food purchases and acquisitions, including foods purchased for consumption at home and away from home as well as foods acquired through food and nutrition assistance programs (both public and private).
